Practising Science and the EPQ option

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Students who demonstrate strong science competence in the first year of Practising Science could direct their second year project towards an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). It’s a more advanced version of the HPQ project qualification, at Level 3 standard and equivalent , designed to 0.5 of an A level.

EPQ is designed to, foster independent study and research skills develop critical thinking and prepare students for higher education and future careers. Like HPQ students:

  • Choose a topic of interest and draft a project proposal for approval.
  • Plan, research, and execute their project independently.
  • Present their findings to an audience.
  • Provide evidence of all stages of project development for assessment.

Practising Science EPQ option

Students’ projects in year 2 of Practising Science could focus on the EPQ framework, which requires the kind of in-depth projecs. that Practising Science is designed around. The EPQ specification highlights two specific project types which fit with science and engineering:

  • Investigation (science): A practical science investigation involving data collection
  • Artefact (engineering): Creation of an prototype, involving design and evaluation

EPQ Grades

The EPQ is graded from A* to E:

  • Grade A* demonstrates exceptional independent research skills.
  • Grades reflect the ability to plan, manage, execute, and evaluate a project effectively.

This qualification provides excellent preparation for university-level study and career development in various fields.
