Dr Tony Sherborne

Imagine a science classroom where students grapple with real-world mysteries, weigh evidence, and defend their conclusions just as professional scientists do. I call this approach—where learners develop deep understanding while practising a junior version of genuine science—“authentic mastery.” It has powered my career for three decades: first during ten years in the classroom and later as the foundation for the resources, courses, assessments and teacher-development programmes I’ve created, including

- Science upd8 – topical activities that bring science news into the classroom, with more than two million downloads
- the ‘WIKID’ 11–14 Science Course, now used by 25% of schools in England
- the KS3 Science syllabus I designed for AQA, adopted by most UK schools

Gemma Young

I have nearly 25 years in science education, much of as a curriculum developer with one foot in the classroom. For Mastery Science, I co-developed most of our output including Proper Science course, and the KS3 syllabus. I've also worked for universities, the BBC, professional bodies and most major UK publishers. I enjoy content creation, consulting and editorial development, and round everything in strong pedagogy, educational research, and student engagement - just the way I try to teach.
