Why Proper Science

GCSE exams are becoming more challenging. Governments are raising the stakes because jobs in the future will go to those students who can go beyond recall, and apply knowledge (Assessment Objective AO2) and analyse with it (Assessment Objective AO3). However, many existing schemes of work are not up to the task. They are based on a ‘content transmission’ which assumes students can absorb complex ideas from a voice, page or screen. Teachers know that knowledge learned this way is fragile – students cannot apply it.

Proper Science uses decades of cognitive science in its big ideas approach to the curriculum:

  • Focus on key concepts and big ideas to connect knowledge
  • Take proper account of the existing ideas students bring with them
  • Provide enough learning opportunity and time for sense-making
  • Explicitly teach strategies to apply and analyse
