Mastery Pre-assessment tasks (KS3)

Pre-assessment tasks give mastery learning the right start by showing exactly what students already understand—and what they don’t—before you introduce new topics. Drawing on Ausubel’s insight that meaningful learning builds on existing knowledge, these short, low-stakes activities quickly uncover prior understanding and reveal any misconceptions. Teachers can then deliver focused mini-lessons to fill gaps or correct inaccuracies, ensuring students arrive at new material with the proper mental scaffolding.

This component—called the Activate stage in our Mastery Learning system sets learners up for deeper, more meaningful understanding in the next Acquire stage, rather than rote memorisation.
